Do Braces Hurt? What to Expect During the First Few Days

The first few days with braces can feel strange. Teeth may feel sore, chewing can be uncomfortable, and a bracket or wire may rub the inside of your mouth. In Denver, Advanced Orthodontic Care helps children, teens, and adults adjust to braces with simple, useful instructions. Dr. Robert Rudman has decades of orthodontic experience, and Dr. Jeff Birg is a certified specialist in orthodontics.

Braces Usually Cause Pressure, Not Sharp Pain

Braces move teeth by applying steady pressure. Because of that, soreness is normal after braces are placed or adjusted. The teeth may feel tender when biting down, and the mouth may need a few days to get used to the brackets and wires.

This discomfort is usually temporary. Many people feel the most pressure during the first few days, then notice it gradually easing.

Soft Foods Can Help

Eating softer foods can make the adjustment period much easier. Try to avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy foods that can bend wires or loosen brackets. Once soreness improves, you can return to your usual meals while still following your braces food guidelines.

Good choices during the first few days include:

  • Yogurt
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Pasta
  • Soup
  • Smoothies
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Soft fruit
  • Oatmeal

Orthodontic Wax Can Soothe Irritation

Brackets and wires may rub the cheeks or lips at first. Orthodontic wax can cover the irritating area and give the tissue time to adjust. Dry the bracket or wire first, then press a small piece of wax over the spot.

Some people also rinse with warm salt water to soothe irritated areas.

When to Call the Office

Mild soreness and pressure are expected. Call our office if you have sharp pain, a poking wire, a broken bracket, a damaged appliance, or severe discomfort that does not improve.

Our emergency orthodontic care page can help you understand what may need prompt attention. If appearance is one of your concerns, ceramic braces may also be worth discussing at a future visit. Some people may also be candidates for Invisalign® instead of brackets and wires.
