School’s out, and if your child or teen has braces, then it’s important to anticipate the little things about summer that can alter the braces routine – namely: sleepovers, vacations and refreshing treats. You can meet these summer obstacles head on with the following:
- Braces-friendly refreshing snacks. Watermelon, smoothies, grapes and sliced mangoes are great options for braces-wearers, and incredibly refreshing! Ice cream and popsicles are summertime staples, and they are safe for braces, but they should be enjoyed in moderation to avoid cavities.
- On-the-go dental hygiene kit. It’s easy to become lax about brushing and cleaning your braces when you’re on a vacation or at a slumber party. But keeping those teeth clean is critical to having healthy, good-looking teeth when the braces come off. Prepare a travel kit – travel-size toothbrush, toothpaste, plus your threaders and floss – that you can easily grab and go.
- Stick to a routine. Staying up late and sleeping in is often the name of the game during the summer. But it’s important to stick to a brushing and flossing routine, and to remember to wear your rubber bands as instructed.
- Don’t chew ice! Ice cubes can definitely bend wires and break brackets. Don’t have an iced beverage on a hot summer day without reminding yourself of this fact.
All of these things will help you stay on track to have your braces removed on schedule. Have a great summer! And if you have any questions about your treatment or want to schedule a consultation with Dr. Rudman in Denver, please call Advanced Orthodontic Care at 303-331-0222.
