When you’re a kid, summertime is all about being able to break the rules. It’s about staying up late, sleeping in, and having fun all day long. There’s also no better time to enjoy your favorite ice creams, popsicles and fizzy drinks than on a hot, sunny, summer day in Denver. For kids with dental braces though, there are some rules that shouldn’t be broken.
If you want to help your child have fun and maintain appropriate orthodontic care this summer, be sure to:
- Schedule an early check-up – There may not be time to visit the dentist mid-summer with all of the fun activities happening, so be sure your child gets a checkup and adjustment before vacation starts.
- Limit consumption of sugary drinks and snacks – Instead of offering up ice cream and sodas, keep ice water and frozen sugar-free treats or refrigerated fruit on hand to help your kid cool off.
- Plan ahead for sleepovers and overnight trips – Don’t let your child forget to bring a tooth brush or floss when spending the night with a friend or heading off to summer camp. Help your child pack a bag with all of the appropriate dental accessories.
- Set a goal to encourage good behavior – Scheduling a post-summer vacation dentist visit with a reward for a good check-up can provide an incentive for your child to follow the rules even when he or she is not under your supervision.
By taking extra care to make your child’s life with braces easier during summer vacation, you can ensure your orthodontic investment will provide successful results while keeping your kid happy and healthy.
