First Day of Summer and Your Braces

Denver student wearing braces during the summer

The first day of summer is Thursday, June 21. Although, in Denver it really feels like summer already! We’ve enjoyed warm, sunny days for weeks now. Did you know that the summertime can be a great time for children and young adults to get braces? Here are a couple reasons:

  • Flexible schedules. With students on summer break, it may be easier to schedule consultations and appointments. Call our office to find out about availability and how we can work around your family’s schedule.
  • Get accustomed outside of the classroom. Braces take a little while to get used to. The first few days, it may feel strange to have braces on your teeth, but after that, most people are perfectly used to the feeling.
  • Young girl in Stapleton CO wearing braces and eating watermelon Cooling treats. Cold watermelon, grapes, maybe even the occasional popsicle or a little ice cream – these summer treats can be quite relieving to the orthodontic patient. Especially if your teeth are a little sore because you received new arch wires the day before, cool treats can provide a numbing sensation.
  • More time to practice dental care routine. Braces require a slightly different brushing style and threaded floss. Conical, “Christmas tree”-shaped brushes are also an optional tool which can be used throughout the day to free trapped pieces of food. Kids and young adults get the hang of it quickly, but it can be much more comfortable to learn these techniques over the summer. When school is back in session, they’ll know which brushes and floss they want to bring with them and how to use them.
