Orthodontics is an art and a science, so it is important that you find an orthodontist who is highly skilled at both. The shape and positioning of your teeth can affect not only your appearance but your health as well. Choosing the right orthodontist for your family can be a challenge, so at Advanced Orthodontic Care, we recommend that you start by asking a few pertinent questions before making your choice.
Start by asking your dentist for a recommendation. He or she is most familiar with your teeth and will have a better idea of which orthodontist has the skills to make the biggest impact on your smile. Next,
if there is a local dental school, give them a call. They may have a good idea of which local practitioners have the experience and advanced training required.
Before you set up a consultation with an orthodontist, make sure he or she is a licensed member of the American Association of Orthodontists. Members of this organization have completed two to three years of postgraduate classes and clinical work. It is also required that they remain up-to-date on research and technological advances.
And then there are the most common questions: What is the orthodontist’s level of experience? How long has he or she been practicing? How large is the orthodontist’s practice? How varied and advanced are the treatments offered? And finally, ask to see before-and-after photos of previous patients.
