How Do I Know Which Orthodontic Treatment is Best For Me?
You may be a candidate for any of the three, or you may benefit more from one than the other. Rely on Dr. Rudman and Dr. Birg to determine which one will work best for you. There are various considerations, including how your teeth need to move, the bite problems you have developed, cost, expectations and other factors.
What to Expect: Getting Started with Orthodontics
If you are interested in straightening your teeth, your next step is to call our office to arrange a consultation. During your first couple of visits, we will build your treatment plan. Below are some of the things you can expect.
What can I expect from my Orthodontic Visit?
Your first visit to our comfortable Denver office is about 30 minutes long. We know your time is valuable, so to expedite treatment, we may also reserve time following the exam for diagnostic records. The records include X-rays, photos and impressions for study models and are necessary for developing the appropriate treatment plan. This additional appointment will last approximately one hour.
During the initial examination for each patient, we will address the following questions that cover the basics of orthodontic treatment. We encourage you to ask questions as well.

- Is there a condition that orthodontics can address?
- Is treatment needed now or should treatment be delayed until appropriate growth, tooth eruption or other factors have occurred?
- What treatment procedures will be used to correct the problem?
- Do any permanent teeth need to be removed?
- How long will treatment take?
- How much will it cost?
- What are my payment options?
While Dr. Rudman and Dr. Birg can often answer these general questions about treatment during the initial examination, they will address specific areas after careful analysis of the diagnostic records. We feel it is important to analyze each patient’s specific needs, because in-depth planning leads to the best possible results and higher patient satisfaction.

Preparing Your Orthodontic Treatment Plan
After your consultation and the gathering of diagnostic records, Dr. Rudman and Dr. Birg will create a custom treatment plan to straighten your teeth and align your bite.
After you’ve discussed how the orthodontic treatment will proceed, you will meet with our treatment coordinator to learn about financial arrangements and our office policy. Treatment fee quotes are good for a time period of 12 months from the initial exam. After a year, a new exam will need to be performed to determine if your needs have changed.
Then we’ll arrange your next appointment to place your braces or Invisalign® trays. This is an exciting appointment as your treatment will finally begin! You’ll be on your way to the straight, healthy smile of your dreams.
Early Intervention Orthodontics for Children
From children to adults, people of diverse ages can be good candidates for orthodontics. But there is often an optimal time period to begin treatment. Oftentimes this optimal age is whenever the first signs of orthodontic issues appear, or no later than age 7. Beginning treatment at this time ensures the greatest result and the least amount of time and expense.
While a child this young probably does not need actual braces yet, it is a good age to bring them to our office for an appointment. Dr. Rudman and Dr. Birg will be able to examine their teeth and bite in order to anticipate the right timing for treatment.
What Are The Benefits of Childhood Orthodontic Evaluation?
Early evaluation provides both timely detection of problems and greater opportunity for more effective treatment. Prudent intervention guides growth and development, preventing serious problems later. When orthodontic intervention is not necessary, an orthodontist can carefully monitor growth and development and begin treatment when it is ideal.
Why is Age 7 Considered The Optimal Time For Screening?
By roughly the age of 7, the first adult molars erupt, establishing the back bite. During this time, Dr. Rudman and Dr. Birg can evaluate front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. For example, the presence of erupting incisors can indicate possible overbite, open bite, crowding or gummy smiles. Timely screening increases the chances for an incredible smile.
The Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment
The benefits of early treatment may include:
- Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
- Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
- Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
- Preserving space for un-erupted teeth
- Reducing the need for tooth removal
- Reducing treatment time with braces
Why Should Malocclusions Be Treated?
According to studies by the American Association of Orthodontists, untreated malocclusions can result in a variety of problems. Crowded teeth are more difficult to properly brush and floss, which may contribute to tooth decay and/or gum disease. Protruding teeth are more susceptible to accidental chipping. Crossbites can result in unfavorable growth and uneven tooth wear. Open bites can result in tongue-thrusting habits and speech impediments. Ultimately, orthodontics does more than make a pretty smile—it creates a healthier you.
Best Tools for Cleaning Around Braces and Aligners
To keep your teeth and orthodontic appliances clean, use an orthodontic toothbrush with soft bristles and a V-cut design. Interdental brushes or proxabrushes are highly effective for cleaning between brackets and under wires. If you’re wearing aligners, consider using a cleaning solution specifically designed for clear trays, along with a soft brush to gently remove debris.
Recommended Toothpaste and Mouthwash
Use a fluoride toothpaste to strengthen enamel and reduce the risk of cavities. Avoid whitening formulas during treatment, as they may leave uneven color when braces are removed. An alcohol-free, antimicrobial mouthwash can help reduce plaque buildup and soothe inflamed gums while providing fluoride protection.
Flossing Techniques with Braces
Flossing is more challenging with braces, but it’s critical. You can use a floss threader or orthodontic flossers designed to slip under the archwire. Water flossers are also an effective, gentle option for removing plaque and food particles from hard-to-reach areas.
Nutrition and Diet During Treatment
What you eat plays a major role in both your orthodontic treatment success and your oral health.
Recommended Soft Foods After Adjustments
After adjustments, your mouth may feel tender. During this time, opt for soft foods such as mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, smoothies, yogurt, and oatmeal. These foods are gentle on your teeth and easy to chew without causing discomfort.
Foods That Support Strong Teeth and Gums
Incorporate nutrient-rich foods like leafy greens, dairy products, fish, and nuts to support healthy enamel and gum tissue. Foods high in calcium and vitamin D can strengthen your teeth, while vitamin C supports gum health and healing. Additionally, crunchy fruits and vegetables like apples and carrots can naturally clean your teeth and stimulate saliva production, which helps neutralize harmful acids. Including phosphorus-rich foods like eggs, meat, and legumes can also aid in protecting and rebuilding tooth enamel, contributing to a healthier, more resilient smile throughout your orthodontic treatment.
Tips for Eating Out or at School with Braces
When dining out or packing a lunch for school, choose softer menu items like pasta, rice bowls, or steamed vegetables. Avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy foods that can damage brackets and wires. Always carry a travel-sized toothbrush or floss pick to clean your teeth after meals.

Costs and Financing for Orthodontics
Your consultation will include a quote for the cost of treatment. Some insurance policies include certain types of orthodontia. We will file your claims if you believe your insurance provides such coverage. You will need to refer to the details of your own policy to verify coverage.
Our office also provides several payment options, which you can read about in full on our financing page. Such options include discounts for pre-payment in full, as well as interest-free monthly payments with a certain percent down.
