What Kinds of Food Should I Avoid With Braces?

Traditional braces need to be worn with care to avoid breaking brackets, loosening bands, or bending the arch wire. If a part of your braces breaks, the amount of pressure being applied to your teeth will change, causing them to stop moving or even move the wrong way. A long appointment is generally required in order to repair broken braces and get your teeth moving in the right direction again, resulting in loss of treatment time.

Watching what you eat during treatment can help the entire process go much more smoothly, ensuring that your braces stay intact and correct your teeth in the proper amount of time.

Some foods to avoid while wearing braces include:

  • Apples
  • Corn on the cob
  • Hard candy
  • Popcorn
  • Jerky
  • Pizza Crust

Consuming foods high in sugar content also invites problems during braces treatment, as the sugar can cause bacteria in your mouth to produce acids that stain and decay your teeth. If you do eat sugary foods every once in awhile, take care to thoroughly brush your teeth immediately afterwards. Brushing and flossing your teeth after each meal during braces treatment will help keep them strong and healthy.
