Questions about Braces
What types of braces are available?
There are several types of braces available these days. Dr. Rudman will discuss which type may be best for you depending on your needs, as well as your lifestyle. Besides the traditional braces you are probably most familiar with, and which are still an option, other types may fit you better. Clear braces are almost invisible. Invisalign clear plastic aligners fit over the teeth as a mouth guard might. They can be removed for meals or special evenings out. Incognito, or invisible braces, are worn on the back side of the teeth, and may not be noticed by those around you. All of these types of braces have their pros and cons. Discuss these with Dr. Rudman.
How long will I have to wear braces?
Depending on the severity of the issues with your mouth and teeth, this will differ from person to person. It may also depend on your age. Our jawbones continue to grow into our early 20s, so teens may have an easier time with their braces, though this does not mean the amount of time is necessarily lessened. Other areas of concern are how healthy your teeth and gums are, as well as how closely you follow Dr. Rudman’s instructions. Most people will wear their braces from one to Two years, and then be required to wear a retainer after that.
Will my braces cause pain?
Perhaps one of the biggest concerns patients have is the amount of pain they will feel. Pain is certainly subjective, however any “hurt” you feel with your braces is mostly discomfort or soreness. You may feel the most discomfort when you first start wearing your braces, and after certain appointments. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help with this. People who wear Invisalign aligners may feel some discomfort when changing the aligner, but this is most often the case with individuals who have a history of sensitive gums or teeth.
Does it matter how old I am when I get braces?
Age should not be a factor when deciding to get braces. If you are uncomfortable with the way your teeth look, then consider contacting Dr. Rudman for a consultation. Most of the patients at Advanced Orthodontic Care are adults, and many of them are over 55-years-old.
Can I play sports with braces?
Yes, but we encourage you to wear a mouth guard when playing any sport. If you are an extremely active person who plays sports with any kind of contact, Incognito may be the best option for you because they are worn on the back side of your teeth.
What happens after I get my braces removed?
After your braces come off, it is important that you follow through with the retention phase of your orthodontia. A retainer will help the teeth and bones adjust to their new position. You will continue to have retainer check-ups with Dr. Rudman over the next year. However, you should continue wearing your retainer at night for as long as you wish your teeth to remain straight.
