What Is Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment?

In recent years it has become increasingly common for many dentists to recommend a two-phase orthodontics treatment regimen in the Stapleton area. Early treatment plans, often called Phase 1 orthodontic treatment, are developed for children as young as 5, but age 7 is considered to be optimal. Two-phase orthodontic treatment plans are designed to get the best results and eliminate the need for extractions.

Around age 7, children usually have some of their first permanent molars, establishing the back bite. At this time the bite can be evaluated for potential problems before they develop, including:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Open bite
  • Crowding
  • Missing teeth
  • Gaps between teeth

Evaluation at this early age can help determine if a two-phase treatment plan is best, or it can help establish a baseline to monitor growth and development so that a single phase plan can be developed and started at the optimal time. Phase 1 treatment usually includes the use of expanders and braces on just the front teeth.

While Phase 1 orthodontic treatment may not be necessary for every patient, early evaluation can greatly improve overall outcomes.
