What’s the Best Age for Braces?

Technically speaking, there is no “best” age to get braces. You can straighten your teeth at any time. Over 60% of our patients are adults, and around 10% of those are over the age of 55. As an adult, your jawbone is settled – along with any problems that come with it, including an underbite, overbite, crowded teeth, and/or gaps in your smile. Thankfully, modern orthodontic technology has made adult orthodontic treatment faster, more comfortable, and more practical than ever before. At Cherry Creek Smiles, our experienced Denver orthodontist Dr. Robert Rudman provides a wide range of braces options for adults, including Invisalign® and Incognito™ braces. However, if you are thinking about your child’s dental needs, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic screening by age 7. At this time, a child’s mouth, jaw, and teeth are still growing and developing. Early treatment at this age can help guide a child’s developing teeth into a better position, preserving space for permanent teeth that are still erupting, and avoiding problems like:

  • Impacted permanent teeth
  • Abnormal swallowing
  • Speech problems

Even if you are no longer a teenager, this doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of braces. We can help you achieve a straighter, healthier, and more beautiful smile at any age, in a way that fits your needs and your lifestyle.
