Getting Ready for Retainers

Many patients who are about to get their braces off feel a sense of relief when the big day arrives. However, just because your apparatus is off doesn’t mean you’re “free.” Retainers are a crucial part of orthodontic treatment for our Stapleton patients.

As the name suggests, retainers are designed to maintain the ideal position of your teeth and bite without using braces. Like braces, the retainer will be customized to fit your mouth. Unlike braces, retainers are similar in size and shape to a mouth guard, making it a much more discreet orthodontic treatment.

Our orthodontist, Dr. Robert Rudman, will review key details like when you should wear your retainer and how to care for it. We will continue to see you for the first two years you wear your retainer. These two years generally proceed according to this schedule:

  • Your braces will be removed once your teeth and bite achieve correct placement
  • You will be fitted for a retainer
  • During the next two years, Dr. Rudman will see you periodically to make sure the retainer is upholding the results from braces
  • After two years, you will no longer have to schedule checkup appointments and you can enjoy your new smile!

If you want your teeth to remain straight, you will have to wear your retainer as directed indefinitely. Dr. Rudman can repair damage or make other adjustments after the two-year period is over for a simple visit charge.
