Do Braces Hurt?

Many patients in need of orthodontic treatment are hesitant to get braces because they’re worried about discomfort during the initial procedure and recurring pain with the apparatus. Before you get braces, Denver orthodontist Dr. Robert Rudman will explain the procedure and address any concerns you might have. Though the placement of braces itself is painless, your teeth might be tender for a few days after the procedure. Steps you can take while your mouth adjusts to the apparatus include:

  • Eat soft foods for the first one to two days after your appointment
  • Apply dental wax as needed to cover brackets or wires that are irritating interior portions of your mouth and causing sores
  • Avoid foods or drinks with high acid content, as these could aggravate any sores that have developed
  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, as needed

Braces move teeth and the bite into ideal position through the exertion of gentle pressure throughout the course of treatment. At times, your teeth might feel sore. However, most patients find that any pain they experience is relatively minor and tends to subside quickly.
