6 Things Teens Should Know About Braces

In middle school and high school, everyone tries hard to fit in. Although many teens in the Denver and Stapleton area might resist getting braces in the short term, orthodontic treatment at an early age can set you up for a winning smile in your developing years and into adulthood.

Once you have braces, our Stapleton orthodontist will discuss all of the important do’s and don’ts you should know. These instructions will likely include:

  • Food restrictions are designed to protect the appliance and preserve your oral health – Dr. Rudman will discuss which foods to avoid
  • Contact sports could damage your braces – a custom mouth guard can protect your teeth
  • Braces don’t prevent cavities – just because your teeth are partially covered doesn’t mean you can stop brushing, flossing, and seeing the dentist
  • Braces shouldn’t hurt – your teeth might be tender after the appliance is tightened, but talk to Dr. Rudman if you regularly experience discomfort
  • Treat a loose or broken component as an emergency – Damage to a bracket, wire, or band should be fixed immediately to keep treatment on track and prevent injury to your mouth
  • Correction doesn’t end with braces – you will likely need to wear a retainer after your braces are off; the appliance tends to be less conspicuous than braces

For many teens, the day braces come off is a major milestone. Not only can you show off your smile again, but your teeth will be straighter than they were before, resulting in cosmetic and functional improvements.
